The short version: this blog doesn't use cookies, and it doesn't ask you for any personal information. It counts visits anonymously so I can see which posts are useful, and you can opt out of that. The only other thing it remembers is whether you picked the light or dark theme, and that stays in your browser.

Who runs this site

Greg's BC Notes is a personal blog run by Greg Cooke, based in the UK. It isn't run by my employer, NetMonkeys. For anything on this page, contact me through LinkedIn.

Cookies and similar technology

This site sets no cookies. If you click the theme switch in the header, your choice is saved in your browser's local storage under the name theme, so the site looks the same next time you visit. It's only saved because you asked for it, it never leaves your device, and you can clear it at any time by clearing this site's data in your browser. If you never click the switch, nothing is stored and the site follows your device's light or dark setting.

The same goes for opting out of visitor statistics: that choice is saved under the name analytics, only if you make it.

Fonts are hosted on this site, and there are no ads, embedded videos, social media widgets or advertising trackers.

Visitor statistics

I use Vercel Web Analytics to see how many people visit, which posts they read, which sites sent them here, and roughly what country and type of device they're on. That tells me what's worth writing more of.

It doesn't use cookies, and it doesn't build a profile of you. To tell one visit from the next, Vercel uses a code made from your request that resets every 24 hours, so it can't recognise you on another day or follow you to other websites. I only ever see totals, never individual visitors. See Vercel's analytics privacy page for the details. The legal basis is legitimate interests: knowing which posts are read helps me improve the site.

You can opt out at any time. Your choice is saved in this browser only.

Blocking JavaScript or using a content blocker also stops it.

Hosting

The site is hosted by Vercel. Like any web host, Vercel receives your IP address and basic browser details when you load a page, so it can deliver the page and keep the service secure. I don't use that information to identify you. Vercel may process it outside the UK, including in the United States. See Vercel's privacy policy for how it handles this data. The legal basis is legitimate interests: a website can't be served without it.

The same applies when a feed reader fetches the RSS feed.

Links to other sites

Links to GitHub, LinkedIn, Microsoft Learn and other sites take you to services with their own privacy policies. Nothing about your visit here is shared with them.

Your rights

Under UK data protection law you can ask what personal data I hold about you, and ask for it to be corrected or deleted. In practice, this site doesn't hold anything that identifies you, but you're welcome to ask. If you're unhappy with how your data is handled, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office.

Changes

If the site starts collecting anything new, this page will be updated first.
